The Giver by Louis Lowry
This dystopian novel explores themes of roles in society, government, pain and growing up, through the character of Jonas. As a young man, he lives in a society were there is no war, fighting, or suffering. He lives a life free of crime and poverty until he is faced with The Giver, and the harsh truths he holds.
Topics that can be discussed in this novel could be society, suffering, war, poverty, and change. Students would be asked to consider how life would be like if society were set up as it is in this novel. Would they approve of this way of living. Surely they would approve of a life without suffering, violence, and poverty, but at what cost? This society lacks imagination, creativity, and individuality.
As teenagers, students would be at a point in their lives where they are experiencing change and self-discovery. This novel would be a sufficient tool to use to discuss the role society has on them as an individual. Using critical thinking, they would consider society in the novel compared to current society. What do they prefer? How would they react in the characters situation? How can lack of choice be harmful?
