This book has had recent popularity in Young Adult Literature as both a novel and film. It is a thriller filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. In this story society is divided into five sections and the main character Beatrice is forced to decide to live with her family or be honest and true to who she really is.
Using this literature, various topics could be discussed with adolescents. Such topics include the impact of society and popular culture on individuals. Considering the amount to exposure our population has to social medias, it is important to develop critical thinking in adolescents. This was they can be critical consumers of both information and products. Additionally, it could explore social studies topics such as government and sections of society. For example, what purpose do the five factions serve in society? Why were they set into place and are they achieving their purpose? Students could relate personally to this story by considering the choices they have made they have changed them. Consider where they would fit into this fictional society and to what level they agree or disagree with it.
In education, this may be a book to include as a choice for a free read project or book report. Students who enjoy this genre would be able to explore a fictional piece of literature. There have been cautions about using it for whole class instruction in that it has a significant amount of violence and controversial issues included. For this reason, it would be best used as a novel to help promote choice within the classroom.
