The genre of this book is WWII historical fiction. There are many ways students can make connections from this story to what really happened in WWII. One basic way would be to generate a list of connections between events in the book and events that the students have learned about in history class. Another activity students could do is research some of the roles that the female characters had in the war that were also roles real women had in WWII such as switchboard operator, wireless operator, ATA Pilot, special duties clerk, and SOE agent. Students can also research women’s jobs on the homefront that characters in the book held. Students can connect the story to modern day life by examining how the characters' fates could have been different if they'd had access to digital communication.
